I love ruins.
It’s probably because of dungeon delving and D&D (AD&D) that got me going on decaying monuments, though I’m pretty sure it’s something that I was into way before all of that.
There’s just something about old, decrepit stone temples, fortresses and statues that really rock my boat. It could be because of the intense amount of effort or time required to build such things (before industrial power), I don’t know. It could just be scale.
I’ve never been to a huge city like New York, so I’m not sure if I’d get the same thrill from seeing those modern buildings too. However, I’m not quiet as enamored with modern architecture as I am with the ancient.
That said, this concept art knocks my socks off. (Sorry, source unknown.)

Nice circular inset panel.
Diggin’ it.
Thanks man!
Very cool concept art you found there. For cool ruins that feel extremely authentic, the Uncharted games are fantastic! Half-sunken Spanish colonies, Ancient central American Indian ruins, Rusted out Nazi U-boats, all sorts of stuff. pretty sweet.
That sounds cool. I don’t suppose that there’s an art of Uncharted book, is there?
I don’t think there is a book. Here are a few examples though (not all ruins related though)

Has a sort of 8-bit thing going for it. Will there be a Monster Commute video game?
Yeah, one thing at a time.
I had a good idea for a resource management game… where you were smuggling “contraband” from one city to another, avoiding the CrowBot checkpoints and raids.
All the while, you could upgrade your vehicle/furnace/goblins with the profits.
Dig the idea, but it’s something that I’d need to design, and let other folks make.
That concept art, my friend, is the work of Daniel Dociu. He’s the head designer for Arena-Net, the company that makes Guild Wars (and the highly anticipated Guild Wars 2). I’ve been a huge fan of his for several years. If you want to see more of his work, you should check out is website. http://www.tinfoilgames.com/gallery.php
Yeah, thank you… his work is awesome.
My spouse and I went into the depths of the jungle to crawl up on monuments designed to celebrate human sacrifice. Swimming in the underground rivers was interesting and creepy at the same time. Hey, it beats those places that worship the big eared rodent.
