Speaking of red, I used to love Maraschino cherries when I was a little kid.

I don’t know if was the FD&C Red #40, or the fact that they had other addictive chemicals that made them taste like candied love. (Hey, I’m NOT being dirty here.)

Apparently, they used to be spiked with alchohol, though I never had any of those when I was young. (Heck, we’re talking 1912 here… I’m not that old.)

Anyway, my grandpa would buy me a jar of these magical fruits in the shape of a liberty bell, and I’d eat the entire thing… and then drink the jar fluid known only as “juse”.

While I can’t recommend such action, it did lead to a variety of hallucinations including thinking that John Wayne would make a good Frankenstein monster.

Allura Red AC Facts: (The dye that makes Maraschino cherries red)
- It is not derrived from the cochineal beetle like carmine.
- It is derived from coal tar. (Nice, huh?)
- A study found that increased levels of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder and lower IQ were observed in children partaking in this treat.

Splendid.

So, you know what I’m having for dinner now.

- Daniel
