I'm going to just assume that you've read The Zombie Survival Guide
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombie_Survival_Guide
If you have not, you should. Also the novelized collection of "wtiness accounts", World War Z which followed. So awesome.

My guy and I adhere to a sort of zombie apocolypse survival way of life. We're like atomic bomb crazies in the 60s with their bomb shelters. We're always prepared and have numerous plans. It's mostly toungue in cheek, and most of the emergency plans and back-ups are good for other emergencies [even small ones] as well. I don't actually believe I'll live to see a world disaster on the level with zombies, but I would be totally prepared. Except maybe in the fitness area. I always think, "I should get into shape in case I have to run from zombies." And then I tell myself, "Meh, I'll lose weight and tone right up if I have to run from zombies and eat what I can find." lol

No idea about where you are, but I'd stay right where I am. Well, almost.

Living next door to a military base would be highly beneficial during a zombie invasion. Plus, its Canada, so everyone has at least 2 guns in their home, and either a chainsaw or fire axe.

If you're far enough north you just have to hold out till winter sets in, the walking dead will simply freeze in their tracks and you can dispose of them at your leisure...

Just get it done before spring.

All you down in the land of the sun better hope you get the sun sensitive type zombies or your all likely to get munched or die of thirst. Up here in the inland northwest we still get plenty of sun (in case that helps), have lots of water, and pretty decent places to hole up. If the zombie action was swing plague like where in you needed to stay away from people I'd grab gear/food/guns and head for the hills. If it was more of a traditional bite them and they get turned I'd take a look at heading out to our local air force base. Good fortified positions, lots of guns, and planes in case you need to get out of dodge.

I would agree with that approach, Dane.

Going North for me makes sense, but I'd be afraid that it would be too crammed for escape. I'd need a good gps and some backroad maps, methinks.

I actually had a plan for Zombie outbreak in phoenix. Let's see if I remember it...

Assume that everyone is a zombie. that means places like Walmart, malls or anything open 24 hours is off-limits. My wife was obsessed with clearing out a walmart and holding up in it but, in reality clearing it out would be nearly impossible to do safely. and keeping it safe afterward would be completely impossible with the big glass automatic sliding doors that are designed to come down if pushed on too hard. Consider places with a set open/close cycle that may be close to empty and easily fortified: Schools, goverment installations, etc.
Being that PHX would be nearly impossible to survive long-term without infrastructure, I'd get the hell out of dodge. I'd probably head north or east toward flag or the white mountains. Fresh flowing water in the rivers, game/plants in the forest. find a vacation house or cabin that you can move into and commandeer. being away from population centers will make it easier to get rid of any pesky wanderers that may stumble through your area.

how's that for a slice of fried gold?

the other day, my friend was talking about playing Red Dawn for his college group and I thought about how much cooler Red Dawn would be if it were done with Zombies. Must be something in the water. LOL!

Ah, the advice I've been looking for. Perfect. I'm pretty close to Lake Pleasant Parkway, so that's doable, though I'd bet it would be backed up.

I too am a child of the 80's, but the zombie incursion has captured my imagination of late. Maybe it's all of the big diseases we've been seeing, I dunno.

Maybe what we're talking is a Russian Zombie invasion. Red Dawn of the Dead.

I'd think that New York City would be filled to the top with zombies faster than most. I had no ideas that it is walled.

I have to admit that I have a good 50 pounds of rice here, and lots of pasta and the like. I'd need the water from the pool to survive.

The long term sustainability here in phoenix is pretty bad, so I think you should consider hitting the road. The trick is in what road you hit, most people don't know any way out of town besides the most obvious highways and interstates, but there is another way! I would suggest filling up the van and heading north on 99th ave. It will turn into lake pleasant parkway. As long as you can get past highway 74 there is then a large web of rural backroads that you can follow around the lake and up into the mountains of northern AZ. Once you get up on a mountain, you can probably find a place with a water source that would be a good place to set up camp.

On Mingus mountain there is a large camp grounds called 'Mingus Springs' that I went to as a kid. I would head there. It's between Prescott and Sedona just west of Jerome. They have cabins and other structures for shelter, a lake full of fresh water and a small natural spring. There is wild game up there and between that and some creative farming, I think that would be a pretty decent place to ride out the apocalypse and train your son to be a future zombie killer / human savior.

Maybe it's because I'm a child of the 80s, but I never think about the 'zombie apocalypse' very much. Instead, I usually wonder what I would do if Red Dawn happened. Since I wouldn't have Patrick Swazy to protect me, I think it might be a challenge.
