I’ve known about the world famous “Ed’s House of Eggs” for at least 8 years now. By “known” I mean “invented”. It really just started when my lunch friends couldn’t decide where to go, and I piped up with “Ed’s House of Eggs”. My answer is always loud groans. Nobody really ever finds an egg specialties restaurant very appealing, in case you were wondering.

I like the idea of strange, regional restaurants (with cute food mascots). Many cities have them. In my hometown of Spokane, Washington we have “Dick’s Hamburgers” and “Zips”. These are great because they both have some sort of retro mascots. (Okay, Dick’s has the Panda and Chicken, and Zips has the hot-rod rabbit.)

As a kid, I got to spend my summers in Memphis Tennessee with my grandparents. When I’d show up, they’d take a little vacation, and wheel me across the South and East to Civil War sites. (I liked the cannons.)

On these journeys I discovered the Bob’s Big Boy restaurants; I was finally imprinted with a restaurant chain with a fantastic, professional mascot. From there on, I’ve been really interested in giant, fiberglass characters hawking deep-fried foods.

There’s something so oddly American (and maybe even Japanese) about this kind of concept. I don’t know if it just makes the food taste better, or the paper place mat games more fun.

I’d eat at Ed’s House of Eggs at least once.
