I spent about 2 years trying to figure out what the “monster world” of Monstru was supposed to look like.

Should Monstru be a fantasy styled map, like the ones I made for Agyris?

Should it be something more vector-based, so it looked like my comic characters?

Or should it evoke something entirely different?

Well, after thinking hard about the comic, and how it is in a sense about the American driving experience, I decided to base it on old travel maps from the 1940s and 1950′s.

(And yes, I surely hope that our driving experience is also shared by folks and friends all over the world… but this comic is based upon my experiences behind the wheel here in the US.)

After a bunch of work, it became a map of retro-monster-Americana… perfect for Monstru.

Anyway, I’m really proud of how it turned out, and how it ties right into my notion that there is a monster world, just on the other side of our own. (Not far from the fairy aesthetic of the turn of the century.)

Anyway, take care, and have yourself a great holiday.
