So, I went to the doctor a couple months back, as I was having some health problems.
I ended up going to the emergency room twice, because I thought that I was having dangerous alergic reactions to some new meds I was taking. (Hives, feeling like my throat was constricting, etc.)
That’s all fine and well, and I’m not dying anymore.
However, my $750 deductible (times two) is a bit painful. I sincerely think that if I had any idea that it was going to cost so much, I wouldn’t have gone.
Man, it sucks. $1400 is a quarter of a book run or so.
I know most of you are probably in the same boat (if you have insurance at all, and live in the US of course.
Anyway, I was fairly naive about the ER visit and how much it was going to cost. I figured that I’d be out of a couple of hundred of bucks.
Now, if I think I’m dying, I just may have to risk it next time.
On the plus side, my new meds are causing fewer problems than the first ones.
Damn, dirty apes.

That’s a nasty deductible, but at least you have the option. Some of us with no insurance just have to suck it up completely. It would cost me like 10 grand to go to the emergency room. Our country’s insurance system = VERY broken.
Absolutely. I went through my 20′s and most of my 30′s with no insurance too.
We have a very odd idea of what “normal care” is compared to Europe.
Gorilllllllllllllaa! (40 foot purple ape reference)
Now, if you had died you would have wondered if the deductable would have been worth it.
Long live Steam Crow.
Well sure.
It’s just one of those things where my own stupidity (no idea what the deduction was) along with my Doctor not mentioning it (what the side-effects might be and what to watch out for.)
This whole thing was about side-effects, and I had to pay $1500 to find them out?
What sort of healthcare can a citizen of MONSTRU expect?
Well, that’s true. I dunno what I was thinking. Dawna gets mad at me when I tell here that I shouldn’t have went to the ER.
I stopped dealing with doctors after outliving three of them.
I figured that since I wasn’t following their advice anyway and they kept dying off, I must be doing something right and never bothered finding another one.
I’m not very keen on hospitals either since it seems like every time I take someone I care about to one I never get them back.
Just the other day at lunch, we were discussing the “guy rules” for going to the doctor. We tend to only go to the doctor if:
1) Something is obviously missing and hurts
2) It hurts too much to keep watching TV
3) It’s making a real big mess
Outside that, rub some dirt on it and walk it off. Not really the best health care plan.
Well certainly, I subscribe to these rules myself.
Crazy rash allergic reaction, covering arms and legs in hives and spreading to mouth – was #1.
Throat closing up, that was #2.
Good times.
Glad you’re feeling better. One secret my family has figured out is that going to an Urgent Care facility instead of an ER can really save time and money. Urgent Care works like a doctor visit, so I save $100 on co-pay vs. ER. They can handle most emergencies and will get you past the red tape if it turns out you really do need to go to the ER.
