We’ve decided to begin working on our first collection of the Monster Commute – in book form.
It will collect the first X# of strips, how many I’m just not sure of just yet. I’m hoping to offer some extras as well, though a lot of that hasn’t been determined just yet either.
Our goal is to have it in hand in the first quarter of 2010, and to put out at least one book per year.
Now’s your chance to help influence the project:
- What kind of extras would you like to see?
- Should I include any commentary? (like the blog)
- What could I do to make it irresistible to you?
Once we get rolling (and months closer) I’ll be doing a pre-order drive to help make this a reality.
Would you consider preordering it? (When it’s almost done.)

First book? Everything up to the beginning of the Kings of the Road story.
For extras? Deleted scenes, alternate endings, outtakes, gag reels.
Irresistible to me? Include a giant fold out map.
I would pre-order it right now if I could.
For your first book, you should gather all your rough sketches and concepts, no matter how rough and publish them. Always good to see the preliminary garbage and brain detritus that’s compounded together to make some memorable awesome characters. Good luck on the book!
Yes, I would preorder the collection! And yes, I’d like to see commentary, I think it adds dimension to the comics. As for what would make it irresistible? An official Authority bionic monster pony! You just can’t beat that sort of thing…
Gargle Yargle-meister with a side shot of Dark Crystals.
Pork in a Bottle = wheezy, greazy goes down easy!
(FYI. up near the Canada border, they call Ranch Dressing “Fat Girl Ketchup”! Ha!
I’d love to see the blog posts, maybe even some additional “directors commentary” in there. I really like the additional notes in the Penny Arcade and Devil’s Panties collections. They add more of a connection to the work, and the sense that I’ve gotten a special look behind the curtain.
Also, an all-new storyline focusing on our friend the zombie would be a super-duper extra. You know, in your spare time in the afternoon…
And heck yeah, I’d pre-order one!
Needs more taxis!
i’d like to see preliminary work (character design sketches, etc) and some commentary. Possibly a special section of Monster/Machine strips.
I think adding some of the more memorable blog entries would be a good idea. Other extras like ‘Beastio’s Co-Pilot Checklist” strip might be fun too. I always enjoy the insert strips like that. Perhaps a Toni Oni Bounty Hunter want ad might be fun. Some exclusive content always makes things more attractive to me, why buy a book when it is available for free online? I’ll look forward to hearing more about the book! You should expect an email from me in a couple hours too!
i have been reading since the beginning, and this is my first post, because i am really excited about a moncom book! extras like the blog would be good, maybe a lengthier than normal author bio, maybe a ‘making of’ section with some of your inspiration pictures and/or con pics. if i have any money when pre-order rolls around, i’d want to do that.
Hey, thanks for all of the feedback, folks. Thanks too for your support.
- Extras: Check. Gotta do something extra and cool. I’m with you.
- Sketches: I don’t actually have any as these guys were conceived digitally. I do have the initial character designs from Monster Machine though, and some other sketches from other projects that lead to this one.
- A solid intro: I’d like to tell you more about the “why” of how we got monster commute going, and the inspiration behind it.
- Taxis – Yes, needs more taxis. Keep reminding me until you see some.
One idea that I’d like to explore are “world facts” on each page. Just a little nugget of Monstru for you.
I’m thinking. Keep adding your ideas, as now is the time to influence me.
And thank you!

How about something akin to “Today in Monstru History” and give a little nugget of info on something that happened on this day in Monstru’s dimly lit, carefully redacted, and lovingly buried past.
Oh, and more taxis!
